MacCormac College today announced it will kick off the 100th anniversary of its Court Reporting Program on July 10th, 2012.
MacCormac will host a National Court Reporters Association (NCRA) Mini-Convention on the Colleges campus on July 10. Current and prospective court reporting students will attend seminars, draw for prizes, meet with vendors, and network with experts in the field.
Our goal is to showcase the strong demand for court reporters, the exciting advances in reporting technology and the variety of positions available within the field of reporting, said College President, Dr. Marnelle Alexis Stephens.
MacCormac graduates students in many career-oriented majors, ranging from medical office technology to paralegal studies. We are proud to have been training the court reporters of Chicago and beyond for 100 years.
Ask the average person about court reporting, and he or she might envision secretaries typing on old-time stenograph machines. Those days are long passed. The industry today is a versatile, lucrative, cutting-edge field driven by new technologies with plenty of room for growth. For example, all of the broadcast captioning currently on television is produced by reporters.
Some highlights of the Mini-Convention include a session facilitated by FBI Agent Douglas Seccombe on Forensics in Court Reporting, and a talk on CART (Computer Access Realtime Translation) Captioning by Kathy Cortopassi, a MacCormac alum who founded her own Captioning business, Voice to Print Captioning, LLC.
The program also will feature Melanie Sonntag, former NCRA President, who will speak about the future of the field of court reporting.
MacCormac Colleges Court Reporting Program is the oldest in the nation. MacCormac was originally located near the University of Chicago campus in Hyde Park. At that time, many students were enrolled at both institutions and registered for business and typing courses at MacCormac College. The College is also home to the oldest Paralegal Studies Program in the State of Illinois.
MacCormac College is now located in the historic Heyworth Building in downtown Chicago at 29 East Madison Street. In addition to court reporting, degrees are available in the following fields: Paralegal Studies, Criminal Justice, Business Administration, Entrepreneurship, and Medical Office Technology.
